Review
Have you ever wanted a game where you can play as your favourite animal and gun down others? Favourite animal is a Skunk? Become one. Blue Jay? That’s here too! Donkey? We got you covered! Now drop into the abandoned theme park, and begin the slaughter! Super Animal Royale is a Battle Royale game with lobbies going up to 64 players. I know, I know. “Uhhhg. Another Battle Royale? Reaaaaaaallllllllyyyyyy? Don’t we have enough?” My answer to you, is yes, yes we do. But! This one is adorable and cute.
My main issue with most Battle Royales, is they start off fun, but slowly lose their luster. Mostly because they’re all in the same backdrop. Whether it’s 3rd person or 1st person, it’s somehow all militaristic. But this is witty and silly, and you can be an animal! Who doesn’t want to be!? Plus there’s hundreds to choose from! 365 to be exact! Plus I’m sure more will be added in coming updates and seasons. I mean, it’s all basically the same animals, but just different colours. So first you start with basic skins. Like a dog, or cat. But eventually you can be a skeleton cat, or my animal of choice right now? A beautiful Husky! Every time you finish a match, you get animal DNA (but no Dino DNA…) to go towards unlocking new skins. Or you get these fancy little items called “Super DNA Magnets”, which can help you get specific DNA you want, so you don’t have to wait as long for your favourite animal!
The gameplay loop works as any other Battle Royale. Start in a plane, in this case an eagle, choose a spot to land, drop down, kill everything you see and be the last person alive! A simple concept, tried by many. Some succeed, others fail. But the thing I love most about this is it’s a twin stick shooter! Though that sometimes makes it difficult. Like when you’re trying to be pinpoint accurate from a distance, but you just can’t get the reticle to the right spot so you shoot ALL around the enemy, then die. Or you get stuck inside of a person so the reticle starts bouncing around as you try to shoot the person….then you’re dead. You die a lot! Some weapons feel downright dirty. Like the shotgun. Point blank, no one stands a chance. Then you have something like the hunting rifle. A single shot rifle that needs to be reloaded after every shot. It stands no chance against anyone with an automatic gun. Or other weapons, like a bow and arrow. They just feel out of place. Especially if you make it to the end of a game.
Then there are cosmetics and challenges galore! When you level, you get random cosmetics. When you do challenges, you get cosmetics! Like win a certain amount of games, or use campfires, or get kills with a certain weapon. There are hundreds! Each challenge usually has about 3 tiers. The weapons have about half a dozen. Though the last tiers of challenges are usually locked behind the paywall of the game. So you can complete the challenge, but you don’t get the reward unless you buy the Super Edition of the game. Then you have the battle pass. Or as this game calls it, Animal Pass. You get to progress in it, but if you want to get all the rewards, you do need to pay for it. But at the end of the day, it’s all for cosmetics. Nothing gets you added bonuses. The only thing that gives you a leg up is practice.
Don’t forget kids, practice makes perfect, and you’ll get a ton of practice, as games go fast! A full game lasts between 5-10 minutes. Not too long, and not too short. Unless you die as you hit the ground, which is very possible. But it’s so easy to lose a few hours into the game without realizing because of how quick the games are! Plus there’s little story challenges that can be found throughout the map! Though if you complete them, again you need the Super Edition to unlock the cosmetics. I can’t wait for more to be added so I can learn more about the Super Animal world, or more about Skelecat. Plus with the cross save feature, you can take your account to any platform and keep chipping away at anything! Like your Animal Pass or challenges.
Rating
Pros:
- Quick Matches
- Ton Of Animals To Unlock
- Tons Of Challenges
Cons:
- Some Weapons Feel Useless
- Hard To Be Accurate At Distances
- Lots Of Locked Cosmetics
Summary
I can’t tell you how much I love this game. I play it every chance I get. Plus it’s easy to squeeze in a match or two throughout the day when I have a bit of downtime. Plus there’s always a new animal I want to unlock, or a certain cosmetic I’m after in the Animal Pass.
I can’t stop playing! Even if my win % sucks, I will win eventually! Plus with the cross save feature, it’s great that I can take my challenges to Xbox to play with friends there, and still complete stuff! All I can say is download this and play it, and become top of the food chain baby!
