A Short Hike Review

Introduction

A Short Hike is a short adventure, open-world game, where the goal is to hike to the top of a mountain’s summit to receive cellphone reception. Meeting other hikers and interesting folk along the way.

Review

Claire, the sweetest, most helpful young adult, ever, is who you follow through this tale of adventure and heights. Meeting other friendly and talkative folk along the way.

I was super excited about this game being released on PlayStation, and boy, I was not disappointed. This adorable short game was everything I was excited about.

It was very popular in 2019/2020 and, at the time, was only released on Switch, PC and Steam, so when I heard that it was coming to PlayStation, I couldn’t wait to experience it myself. I fell in love with it within the first 5 minutes and just couldn’t get enough.

There’s so much to explore, characters to speak to and items to collect that after finishing it, it felt like no time at all had passed; but 2 hours had gone by.

Each character I spoke with had their own little story and aspiration, which I feel can be rare in a small game like this. But each one was unique and so interesting; I just had to keep talking to them, as there was constantly new dialogue.

The music was so perfect for the game and added to the calm and tranquil playthrough(s). Yes, playthroughs, The game can be very short if not collecting items and exploring the area, so I went back for more. Which I didn’t mind at all as I couldn’t get enough of it.

Every little bit of detail in this game was perfect and so thought-out; from the colours and movement of the vegetation, characters and surroundings, to the different pixel options from the Options menu. I admit, it did take me quite some time before I found the pixel setting, so if you play this game, which I HIGHLY recommend, just change those at the start of the game, otherwise the default setting isn’t quite as fun.

The sounds of the forest, water and mountain were so fine-tuned, at one point I thought the chirping birds were coming from outside my bedroom window. It was strange, because it was night time when I played the game.

I didn’t experience any faults with this game; no glitches, no issues, no problem.

Rating

Rating: 10 out of 10.

Pros:

  • Adorable, loveable characters
  • Short game
  • Open-world

Cons:

  • Pixel options if not aware

Summary

A truly amazing experience with heartfelt conversations and loveable, adorable characters. Short game so not very time consuming and would be a quick platinum if using a guide.

I would recommend just exploring and playing it first without a guide to just experience the full aspect of its greatness.

  1. Wow, a 10/10 rating. I’ll definitely try this one out, what a lovely review. If not in real life, I can at least go on a hike in the virtual world!!
