Takorita Meets Fries is a little visual novel by developer ROSEVERTE. It was released to PC in 2020, and Ratalaika Games published it on Console October 1st, 2021.
Takorita is a lovely little princess of the Sea Kingdom. She decides she has had more than enough of the food selections. All she can eat is soup, little fish, and seaweed. So she takes it upon herself to set off on a quest to the land above, against her parents wishes, so that she may find better food. She is accompanied by her bodyguard Mermer, or Mer for short, who unfortunately is a mute. On her quest, she finds Dino, who is the son of the village leader, and Ina, who is a chef! They decide to follow Takorita around as she follows her “hunches”, and they find the magnificent potato! This sets the whole adventure in motion!
The game is a very short, very silly visual novel. With laughs galore! The characters are all mostly likeable, even if one is a mute. Though Mer expresses his feelings mostly through crying, I will say it was rather annoying for it to happen so much. The screen would shake, make a loud noise, and then he’d be crying. It feels like something that would’ve been funnier to see if it didn’t happen once or twice every single minute! You do get to hear his voice once though. That’s it. Just very briefly, as the game is silent, so you have to read it.
On your journey you’ll only end up hitting two dialogue choices that split the story into its 4 different sections. So you only need to make two separate saves, if you wanna see all of it, without having to backtrack through previous dialogue. Luckily each path only takes about 20 minutes to read through, so it’s not too much of a hassle. Each ending did sort of end up at the same place though. With Takorita and the gang just trying a different variation of French Fry spices. So sure this was silly to see, the reactions just felt the same to every ending. “Wow this is so good! You’re a genius, Takorita!”. I would’ve loved it if some endings were not “perfect”. But hey, at least there’s a cute little route chart!
After you see all the endings, you get thrown into the epilogue. The epilogue does it’s best to answer a question that you ask yourself constantly. “How will you eat these foods underwater?”. Well after only an hour, Takorita finally realized the question herself. But at least it decides to set up the possibility of a sequel! Which I’d be rather okay with.
- Silly Dialogue
- Lovable Characters
- Short And Sweet
- A Joke Is Overused
- The Endings Are All The Same
- A Question Is Saved For The Epilogue….Just Because?
This game had me laughing a lot. It was short and silly, and kind of makes an excellent bedtime story. It’s nothing amazing, and the crying joke was a bit overused, but I’d say it’s something worthwhile to read. Especially if you have a child. They might laugh just as much as you!
